Christopher Adam Bumstead, known as Chris Bumstead or CBum, is a Canadian professional bodybuilder in the IFBB Pro League.
Born in Ottawa, Ontario, on February 2, 1995, Bumstead is one of the leading names in the Classic Physique category on the international scene.
He is known for his balanced body aesthetics and his consecutive victories in Mr. Olympia, where he became the Classic Physique champion from 2019 to 2023.
Early life and first steps in bodybuilding
Growing up in Ottawa, Bumstead excelled in several sports during his teenage years, including football, basketball, baseball and ice hockey.
At the age of 14, he began lifting weights, and throughout his youth he developed an increasing interest in physical training.
Between 9th and 12th grade, he gained 55 pounds (about 25 kg) of muscle mass, focusing especially on developing his legs.
Bumstead's introduction to competitive bodybuilding came through his brother-in-law Iain Valliere, a professional bodybuilder, who saw potential in the youngster and decided to mentor him.
In 2014, Bumstead entered his first regional-level bodybuilding competition in Ontario, competing alongside his sister Melissa Valliere, who is also a bodybuilder.
Both won titles in their categories, and Bumstead quickly fell in love with the sport.
Transition to professionalism
In 2016, at age 21, Bumstead achieved a major milestone by winning the IFBB North American Bodybuilding Championships, earning his Pro Card and becoming a professional bodybuilder.
His debut in the world's premier bodybuilding competition, Mr. Olympia, came in 2017, where he placed second in the Classic Physique category, a position he repeated in 2018.
However, Bumstead's 2018 journey was marked by difficulties. Shortly after that year's Mr. Olympia, he was hospitalized due to a kidney problem, which resulted in severe fluid retention.
He spent three nights in the emergency room and required treatment to stabilize his potassium levels. Despite the setback, Bumstead returned to training and in 2019, he won his first Mr. Olympia title.
Dominance in the Classic Physique category
Starting in 2019, Chris Bumstead began a series of consecutive Mr. Olympia victories, cementing his name as the top athlete in the Classic Physique category.
Between 2019 and 2023, he won the competition five times, becoming the first bodybuilder to achieve such a feat in Classic Physique.
His body aesthetic, which mixes muscular volume and harmonious proportions, is widely admired in the sport and is seen as one of the most successful examples of the Classic Physique division.
In addition to his Mr. Olympia wins, Bumstead has also won other notable competitions over the years, including the Pittsburgh Pro and the Toronto Pro in 2017.
He continued to improve his fitness year after year, working with Iain Valliere until 2022, when they announced they would stop training together to focus on their own careers.
Online presence and entrepreneurship
Chris Bumstead has developed a significant presence on social media and YouTube, where he shares content about his lifestyle, workout routines, and bodybuilding journey.
He has millions of followers on his platforms, making him one of the most popular bodybuilders. This digital engagement has allowed Bumstead to become an influential figure beyond competition.
In 2021, he signed with RAW Nutrition, a supplement company, and subsequently launched his own line of products, including proteins and pre-workouts, focused on athletic performance.
In September 2024, CBum announced its partnership with Gymshark, further expanding its presence as an entrepreneur in the fitness world.
